Frequently Asked Questions
What brand and types of jeans do you repair?
We are happy to repair any brand or type of jeans. This includes both men's and women's jeans. We want you to be happy with your jeans and wear them as long as possible, regardless of where they are from.
What's the difference between you and a typical tailor?
Most tailors repair jeans with a patch, using a common sewing machine and standard thread. We use dedicated industrial repair machines (darning, zigzag, chain-stitch and lock-stitch walking foot), which are able to provide appropriate jean repair. We also will use a variety of weights, types and colors of thread to best suit the repair method for strength, durability and aesthetic.
What’s better? Darning or patching?
Whenever possible, we prefer to make repairs by darning. It rebuilds the fabric, so patches aren’t necessary. Darning also provides a subtler look, a less noticeable repair, and is often more comfortable to wear than a patch.
That said, if you want a patch, please let us know. We can discuss both cloth and leather patch options.
What is your turnaround time?
We generally complete most repairs in one and a half weeks, plus shipping time. Occasionally there can be a slightly longer wait if we are backed up. We ship via USPS Priority Mail with tracking. This usually takes from 2-4 days.
Should I clean my jeans before I send them to you?
Michigan state law requires that any clothes sent in for repair are clean. If it’s been about a year since your jeans were washed, it’s likely they need cleaning. Funky and dirty jeans will be politely refused.
Do you take special repair requests?
Absolutely. If you’re interested in an unusual repair, just email us at email@example.com and let us know what you are looking for. It helps to send us pictures. We are happy to accommodate special requests and will offer recommendations about your request.
When should I have my jeans repaired?
The earlier you get your jeans repaired, the better. We recommend doing so when the hole is bigger than a dime. The repair cost will likely be lower, prevent further damage and can extend the life of your jeans.
What if my jeans are beyond repair?
We will let you know if this is the case, or if the repairs might be too cost prohibitive. Although we want everyone to keep wearing their jeans, there comes a point when you’re better off getting a new pair.
BTW, you won’t be charged for this, except in the case of return shipping.
Where do you make repairs?
All of the work is done at the Detroit Denim Co. Repair Shop at 2987 Franklin Street, Suite B, Detroit MI 48207.
Do you match the shade of the jeans when repairing?
Yes. We do our best to match the shade of your jeans. Often we will use multiple shades of thread to help blend and match the color of worn denim. If you would like to use a contrast color of thread and/or patch, please let us know.
How will I know my jeans are done?
You will be sent an email invoice via paypal once your jean repair is complete and your jeans are ready to come home. Once payment is received your jeans will be mailed via USPS Priority Mail and you then get tracking for your return shipment.
How do you handle shipping?
You are responsible for getting your jeans to us. Once your repair is done, we will ship the jeans back to you. We charge a flat $7 for return shipping ($10 for multiple pairs).
How does your repair guarantee work?
We guarantee all of our repair work. If you find that your repair is less than you expected, please let us know, we will reassess and likely add to your repair.
Please note your jeans will continue to wear, and new holes can appear near the repaired areas (often in high wear areas). Also note that we do our best to match your repair as close as possible; however, we cannot guarantee exact matches of colors with our repairs.
- We include $50 of insurance (via USPS Priority Mail) when we ship your jeans back to you. If you prefer more coverage, please let us know and there will be an additional charge..
- If we ship your jeans internationally, we ship USPS and are not insured. If you want coverage, please let us know and there will be an additional charge.
